Veeam Launches Data Cloud Vault Archive to Reduce Cold Data Protection Costs and Simplify Compliance

Veeam Software has announced the general availability of Veeam Data Cloud Vault Archive, a new archival storage tier designed to help organizations securely retain backup data for the long term while lowering storage costs and meeting evolving compliance requirements.
The new offering expands the Veeam Data Cloud Vault portfolio by providing an archive-class cloud storage tier for older and infrequently accessed backup data. It enables enterprises to move aging backups off high-performance storage without compromising security, recoverability, or regulatory compliance.
As organizations generate increasing volumes of data and face stricter regulatory obligations, long-term backup retention has become more complex and expensive. Many businesses continue storing inactive backup data on premium storage infrastructure intended for rapid recovery, resulting in higher operational costs and reduced storage efficiency.
Veeam Data Cloud Vault Archive addresses this challenge by automatically moving older backups, large unstructured datasets, and redundant, obsolete, and trivial (ROT) data to a lower-cost archive tier. Frequently accessed and recovery-critical backups remain on Veeam Data Cloud Vault, while archived data is securely retained for long-term recovery and compliance.

The company's research indicates that 96% of ransomware attacks target backup repositories, while 58% of organizations consider data residency and sovereignty the most important factors when determining where backup data should be stored.
To address these concerns, Veeam Data Cloud Vault Archive includes immutable, encrypted, and logically air-gapped storage designed to protect archived backups from cyber threats while supporting data placement controls and long-term retention requirements.
Working with Veeam Data Platform v13.1, the solution enables organizations to apply policy-based tiering for older backups, archive large unstructured datasets—including NAS backups—and verify clean restore points before moving data into long-term archival storage.
