Global IT expenditure is projected to reach $4.4 trillion in 2022 amid a surge in technology investment.

Global IT spending is projected to grow by 4 percent in 2022, reaching $4.4 trillion, according to the latest outlook from technology research and advisory firm Gartner.

Most of this expenditure will be directed toward communications services and IT services, which are expected to draw $1.4 trillion and $1.26 trillion, respectively. Meanwhile, organisations are set to channel $824 billion into software and $674 billion into devices, with data centre systems accounting for another $218 billion.

Gartner previously estimated that worldwide IT spending could rise to $4.5 trillion in 2022 — a year-over-year increase of 5.1 percent. Although the updated forecast reflects a slight reduction, Gartner noted that 2022 remains “one of the noisiest years on record” for CIOs, who are navigating complex responsibilities in deploying digital technologies across sectors.

John-David Lovelock, Research Vice President at Gartner, said CIOs are pushing forward with technology investments despite global volatility. According to him, the need for adaptable and resilient digital systems is driving organisations to prioritise spending even during economic uncertainty.

“Geopolitical disruptions, inflation, currency shifts and supply chain issues are all competing for CIOs’ focus. However, unlike early 2020, CIOs are now speeding up their IT investments,” Lovelock explained.

He added that spending decisions will heavily favour areas such as analytics, cloud platforms, customer experience solutions, and cybersecurity.

Inflation Impact

Rising spending is also being fuelled by wage inflation across the IT sector. With a shortage of skilled professionals, companies are offering higher salaries, prompting service providers to adjust their pricing.

Software spending is projected to climb 9.8 percent, while IT services are expected to grow 6.8 percent, driven by ongoing digital transformation efforts. Gartner also predicts that digital business priorities — including enhanced end-user experiences and supply chain optimisation — will support strong, double-digit growth in enterprise applications and infrastructure software in 2023.
