Megaport strengthens its network-as-a-service reach in India by acquiring Extreme IX.
Extreme IX has confirmed that it has been acquired by Megaport Limited, a strategic move designed to accelerate Megaport’s expansion into India’s digital infrastructure market while allowing Extreme IX to continue growing its existing ecosystem of partners and customers in the country.
Extreme IX currently handles more than 4 Tbps of internet exchange traffic in India and connects over 400 networks across seven cities and 49 locations. Through this acquisition, Megaport gains established internet exchange infrastructure in key metros including Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bengaluru, and Pune, along with a dedicated India-based team covering operations, support, sales, finance, and leadership functions.
By integrating Extreme IX’s carrier-neutral internet exchange platform with Megaport’s global software-defined networking capabilities, the companies aim to offer a broader range of connectivity options — including cloud connectivity, data centre interconnects, and on-demand scalable networking services — for customers both within India and internationally.
Raunak Maheshwari, Country Head – India at Extreme IX, described the acquisition as a significant milestone for the company and the broader Indian internet ecosystem. He highlighted Extreme IX’s focus on neutrality and community-driven growth, and said that maintaining continuity for existing members while introducing enhanced capabilities will be a priority.
Megaport’s CEO, Michael Reid, said the acquisition will combine Extreme IX’s local internet exchange infrastructure with Megaport’s global platform, accelerating the company’s entry into India and providing customers with access to high-performance connectivity across markets.
The companies stated that the Extreme IX network will be integrated into Megaport’s global platform in phases. Over the coming months, Megaport plans to roll out services such as cloud connectivity, data centre interconnects, virtual edge, and compute offerings, expanding its global footprint to 27 countries and strengthening its presence in the Asia-Pacific region.
Both Megaport and Extreme IX emphasized that existing customers and partners will see no immediate changes to daily operations. Current services, ports, and peering arrangements will remain unchanged, and Extreme IX will operate as a carrier-neutral and data-centre-neutral internet exchange while continuing to focus on improving internet performance and reliability in India.
