The Economist has sharply criticized former US President Donald Trump’s tariff policies on India, labeling them a “grave mistake” that could push New Delhi closer to realizing its ambitions of becoming a “superpower-in-waiting.”
In a scathing piece titled “India’s Next Move” (August 29 edition), the UK-based publication argued that Trump’s approach effectively unraveled “25 years of diplomacy” by favoring Pakistan and imposing tariffs on India even harsher than those on China.
The magazine noted that India, now burdened with a 50% tariff and strained ties with Washington, stands “humiliated, vindicated, and confronted with a defining test” as it navigates its geopolitical future.
